The medical component of the OnTrak Medical Treatment Program is designed to impact the GABA system – GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) is the major inhibitory chemical neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Pre-clinical, animal studies have confirmed that prolonged alcohol and methamphetamine use and withdrawal cause changes in composition of the GABA receptors, resulting in increased anxiety and stress.
Flumazenil is one of the three pharmacologic components in the medical portion of the OnTrak Medical Treatment Program. Repeated pre-clinical studies in multiple several laboratories on multiple continents have shown that flumazenil is able to restore or reset the GABA receptor to a more normal state following exposure to alcohol or stimulants. Thus, OnTrak acts to relieve cravings and to improve attention and focus, so members can fully engage in psychosocial counseling and the entire recovery process.
